The Complete Irving Berlin Songbooks combines the three individual discs in the Irving Berlin Songbook series -- Blue Skies, Cheek to Cheek, and the instrumental How Deep Is the Ocean -- in a mid-priced slipcase. All three discs are intelligently compiled and presented. Jazz purists may balk at various-artists collections, but compilations rarely come as good as this. It may rely exclusively on the Verve roster, but Songbooks draws a good portrait of the songwriter through interpretations by Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Eckstine, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Anita O'Day, Frankie Laine, Joe Williams, Fred Astaire, Cassandra Wilson, Lionel Hampton, Bill Evans, the Three Sounds, Stephane Grappelli, Red Norvo, Teddy Wilson and Gerry Mulligan, among many others. ~ Leo Stanley
